Nunney Castle
A few weeks ago, my friends and I decided to visit Nunney Castle as we were on vacation and we all enjoyed visiting such places. We chose to hire an airport cab because we had just arrived. I started looking for the best car services right away. Then I arrived at this company that was offering cab services. Because the cab's rates were so much less expensive than those of other cab services, I agreed to pursue it. Because cab drivers frequently show up rather late, we were startled to see the cab when it arrived on time. We discovered fairly early on in the trip that the cab was charming and dependable because the interior was immaculate. We were unaware that we had arrived at our destination because the ride had been so enjoyable and easy. Then we entered the castle to learn more about its past.
A stunning illustration of a moated mediaeval castle situated in a serene community, Nunney, was deemed by architectural critic Nikolaus Pevsner to be Somerset's "most splendid castle." Despite the lack of amenities, Nunney is nevertheless a sight to behold. The charming mediaeval parish church of All Saints is located across the street and is typically open during the day. Nunney Castle, which was constructed by a soldier who had just returned from combat overseas, is less a bastion designed for actual defence and more the realisation of a vision. A royal permit obtained in 1373 allowed a knight by the name of John de la Mare to construct it.
A man of comparatively modest resources, Sir John was starting to gain the royals' favour. His rising influence in the area was evident from the new fortress. The tower had formerly been a part of a larger courtyard that was bordered by a wall on three sides and a creek on the fourth. There were possibly several service buildings inside the courtyard. Richard Prater, a wealthy Londoner who acquired Nunney Castle sometime about 1560, is likely responsible for the major modernization of the castle in the late 16th century. The castle was still owned by the Prater family up to the Civil War when Parliament ordered that it be besieged and destroyed. In 1926, the tower's exterior was placed under state protection after being cleansed of vegetation and debris.
The mediaeval drawbridge pit beneath the far end of the bridge was re-excavated at the same time as the moat. A moat surrounds the tower, which has a four-lobed layout. There was a turret with a conical roof on each corner. Around the tops of the walls, a line of battlements protruded. A kitchen was located on the ground floor, a hall was located on the third floor, and withdrawing chambers were located on the top floor of the tower. There was a chapel that led off of these and into the tower in the far right corner. We had an amazing trip visiting Nunney Castle as it was a nice place.
