Helmsley Castle

We chose to visit the castle because we all enjoy going to these kinds of places. We planned the trip, and on a gorgeous August Saturday, we visited Helmsley Castle. We made the decision to reserve a car service to drive us there from the airport. The driver was waiting for us when we got outside, which astounded us. Excellent customer service and a safe, reliable, and comfortable flight were both provided. The finest aspect was how inexpensive the cab service was in contrast to other businesses. We've decided to take a cab reservation with company for the following time we require an airport transfer. Then we entered the castle to learn more about its past.

The ruins of Helmsley Castle still dominate the neighbouring town, perched on a rocky elevation and encircled by spectacular defensive ditches. On the southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park, Helmsley Fortress is a large castle dating back to the 12th century that commands a view of the market town of Helmsley. Helmsley Castle's spectacular dry moat, the south gate and barbican, the east tower's partial ruin, and the West Range, the Manners family's mostly preserved Tudor residence, are just a few of its highlights. The two latrines and their wall-mounted chutes are the east tower's most noticeable feature.

The tour guide was telling some history of the castle. By 1153, Walter Espec had built a fortress, which Robert de Ros II, a strong northern lord, eventually rebuilt in stone. The majority of the structures that exist now are from this period and the later Middle Ages when additional construction was done by various de Ros family members. In the 16th century, the west range was transformed into a Tudor palace, and interior items from that era, like a carved fireplace, still exist today. During the Civil War, Parliament besieged the castle, and after its capitulation, the structures and defences were partially destroyed. But many of the castle's structures are still standing, especially the large east and west towers and the ruins of the outer barbican. Many of the items found at Helmsley during site clearances in the 20th century are on show in an exhibition in the west range.

The Manners family constructed the magnificent Tudor home, Helmsley Castle's crown jewel, between 1563 and 1587. Large mullioned windows on the inside are a clear indication that the home was constructed for pleasure rather than defence. Beautiful wood panelling, intricate plasterwork decorations, and carved stone fireplaces can be found in the rooms. The lord's private quarters, which have gorgeous panelling, a painted frieze, a plasterwork ceiling, and a timber overmantel, are the pièce de résistance. An exhibition detailing life in Helmsley Castle and the gloomy Civil War siege days is located inside the West Range. View cannonballs used in the siege, a sizable unexploded bomb, swords, daggers, and arrowheads found during excavation, as well as other artefacts.Helmsley Walled Garden, a contemporary garden constructed on the site of an 18th-century kitchen garden for neighboring Duncombe Park, is located right next to Helmsley Castle and is visible from the top of the earthworks. It was a nice experience visiting these places.
