Bewley Castle

The twenty-first century revolutionized a lot of our life. I was born in the 21st century but I am eager to see the places which belong before this century. Bewley Castle was one of them. After joining an IT company, I decided to visit Bewley Castle with my friends. We had heard from our ancestors that the Bishops of Carlisle used to live at Bewley Castle. Bishop Hugh, who died in 1223, is said to have built it. Originally, the castle was known as 'Bellus Locus.' It was rebuilt in 1325 and restored in 1402 by Bishop William Strickland. It was later occupied by the Machell and Musgrave families until 1857.

All the friends agreed to visit Bewley Castle. We booked a cab online. company has a very simple booking process. So we picked it. When we reached the airport, the cab driver was already available at the Airport. He took my luggage and place it in the trunk of the cab. At 8:00 am, we start our journey from Stansted Airport. Although the journey was at a suitable distance, we remain comfortable. We don’t feel any inappropriate behavior by the driver with us. We enjoyed the beautiful music in the cab.

The company cab driver dropped us at the main gate of the entrance. He stopped there and we moved inside the Bewley Castle. Hugh was given the castle, which he named Beaulieu after his previous home in the New Forest. The name is a French translation of the Latin Bellus locus, which means "beautiful place." Some of the senior fellows told us that from 1678 to 1781, Bishop Douglas received £381 in the eighteenth century from timber sold from the Bewley lands to cover the costs of Rose Castle repairs. The Castle is in ruins in 1774. Until the nineteenth century, the Michels owned the estate. In 1807, the estate is leased to William Swainson.

After visiting Bewley Castle, we moved towards New Bewley. Another house visible from the roadside by the track to Bewley Castle is New Bewley. The house was built with castle stone, and over one of the doors, on a sandstone lintel, is Clifford's impaling Vipond's coat of arms. The St Anne's hospital almshouses in Appleby were established in 1652, and the west front of the hospital has an archway above which is an inscribed panel and two coats of arms, one of Clifford impaling Vipond. We saw that the number of shields was set in wall panels, one of which depicts the Vipond arms impaling Bewley. A new residence, New Bewley Cottage, is listed alongside the Castle and New Bewley in the 1991 census. To accommodate modern living, all of the residences have been updated to a high standard.

In the evening, we stopped our visit and made a plan to move back to our houses. We told the driver to pick us up from the gate. He came, we all sat in the cab and the journey starts at Bewley Castle. After a pleasant journey, we were at Stansted Airport. We paid hiring charges to the cab driver and moved towards our houses.
